It took place during the months of February and March 2011, with the first match played on 19 February 2011.

India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in a pulsating final to deliver World Cup glory to their cricket-mad population for the first time since 1983. Sri Lanka smashed 91 from their last 10 overs to post 274-6 in Mumbai, with Mahela Jayawardene making a superb 103. India lost Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar early on but Gautam Gambhir and Mahendra Dhoni rebuilt the innings. Gambhir was out for 97, but captain Dhoni's brilliant unbeaten 91 led India to a famous win with 10 balls to spare.

The final in Mumbai on Saturday is the first time two Asian nations meet in a cricket World Cup final and it will see a straight contest between the world's best batsman and best bowler of all time - Sachin Tendulkar (18,093 ODI runs) versus Muttiah Muralitharan (534 ODI wickets). And also, in all probability, it will be the last World Cup for both. Winning the World Cup has been a lifelong dream for India's Sachin, who is also waiting for his hundredth international ton.India were dealt a blow ahead of Saturday’s final with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni saying that pacer Ashish Nehra is “most likely” out of the match due to a fractured right-hand finger. But opener Gautam Gambhir, who left the field during Pakistan’s innings due to a hamstring problem, is expected to be fit for the final.
Meanwhile, the World Cup final has created a thriving black market with tickets selling for as much as $10,000 each. The face value of the tickets in the Sachin Tendulkar Stand is 15,000 rupees while the cheapest seat for the match at the 33,442-seat stadium was listed at 1,100 rupees, in a country where the average monthly income is about 3,000 rupees.

India booked a place against Sri Lanka in Saturday's World Cup final after beating Pakistan by 29 runs in Mohali.
Virender Sehwag (38) took 21 off Gul from the third over of the innings and Sachin Tendulkar, reprieved by referral and dropped four times on 27, 45, 70 and 81, looked set for his 100th international century with one of his least convincing innings. He was out for 85 from 115 balls as India compiled 260-9, with the help of Suresh Raina after the middle-order failures. Pakistan left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz took a career-best 5-46. Mohammad Hafeez struck 43 and Misbah-ul-Haq made a defiant 56 but Pakistan were all out for 231 in the final over. Munaf Patel picked up two wickets and Yuvraj Singh made up for his first ball duck with a pair of wickets, but the most important breakthrough came when Harbhajan Singh bowled Umar Akmal for 29. Sachin Tendulkar was the man-of-the-match.

Sri Lanka overcame a serious bout of the jitters to book their place in Saturday's World Cup final in Mumbai, after holding their nerve to beat a spirited New Zealand by five wickets. The Black Caps looked set for a competitive score in Colombo, but they collapsed from 192-4 to 217 all out.
Tillakaratne Dilshan (73) and Kumar Sangakkara (54) sent Sri Lanka charging towards victory before a flurry of wickets brought the match to life. Mahela Jayawardene, Sangakkara and Chamara Silva departed in quick succession as Lanka lost four wickets for 25 runs, but Thilan Samaraweera and Angelo Mathews kept their cool to see the hosts home with 13 balls to spare.Reported earlier: Sri Lanka - the 1996 World Cup champions - will meet New Zealand in Tuesday’s semi-final in Colombo. They have won their previous four World Cup games against New Zealand. The overall head-to-head record is 35-33 in New Zealand’s favour but since 2000 it is 20-11 in Sri Lanka’s favour. Earlier Jonathan Trott's stubborn 86 provided the spine as England battled to a seemingly competitive total of 229-6. Dilshan ended with 108 and Tharanga 102 as England suffered only their fifth 10-wicket one-day loss.

Pakistan annihilated West Indies by 10 wickets in the first knock-out match at Mirpur to secure a World Cup semi-final against India or Australia. Mohammad Hafeez, Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal each took two wickets in an over as Pakistan bowled out West Indies for a paltry 112. Afridi claimed 4-30 to reach 21 wickets in the tournament as only Shivnarine Chanderpaul resisted with 44 not out. Tatenda Taibu (53) and Vusi Sibanda (61) rescued the Zimbabwe innings from 36-2 with a third-wicket stand of 110.
Craig Ervine then struck nine fours and a six during his fluent 54-ball knock of 66 to top score in Zimbabwe's 308-6.

Batting first, India lost their last nine wickets for 29 runs after Sachin Tedulkar's departure. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Netherlands batting line up crashed to 127/7 in 38 overs even though they got a good start, taking 56/1 in 15 overs. Zaheer Khan took three wickets for 20 runs to help India bowl out the Netherlands for 189 at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium.Chasing a modest target of 190 to win, India were given a flying start by openers Virender Sehwag (39 off 26 balls) and Sachin Tendulkar (27 off 22 balls) as they added 69 runs in just 7.3 overs. However, a triple strike by Pieter Seelaar and another wicket by Peter Borren had India struggling at 99/4 at one point of time. Yuvraj rescued the home team from this precarious position and guided them to a 5 wicket victory over Netherlands with 81 balls to spare and consolidated their top spot in the points table. India now have 7 points from 4 games with England, who have 5 points off as many games, at the second place. India is still Group B's only unbeaten team, with just a tie against England spoiling its 100 per cent record.
Sachin Tendulkar, today added another feather in his cap when he became the first batsman to score 2,000 runs in the World Cup. He achieved the feat during his 27-run knock in their group B match against the Netherlands at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Playing in his 40th World Cup match, the champion batsman reached the milestone in style, smashing Ryan ten Doeschate for three consecutive boundaries.
